- David Campbell & Kenneth Speirs

An elderly woman was rushed to hospital after being struck by a bus in the heart of Paisley yesterday.

The 84-year-old was crossing St Mirren Street in the town when she was hit by a McGill’s bus.

Emergency crews raced to the scene and the road was closed to traffic for more than hour while the incident was investigated.

Police say early indications are that the woman may have stepped in front of the bus while it was pulling away at a green light.

Witnesses described seeing blood on the woman’s head as she was tended to by paramedics before being whisked to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesman told the Express: “An 84- year- old woman was injured after she was hit by a bus on St Mirren Street around noon.

“She was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing but at this stage there does not appear to have been any criminality on the part of the driver.”

Paisley Cross, from Smithhills Street down to St Mirren Street, and Causeyside Street, was closed off yesterday afternoon following the accident.

A McGill’s bus was parked at the bus stop in St Mirren Street, and police could be seen speaking to a man in a McGill’s uniform.

A witness, who saw the aftermath of the incident, told how he saw the lady lying on the roadway.

“There was an old lady lying on the ground,” he said.

“I could see blood in her hair. She was standing up for a while.

“Paramedics came quite quickly, then she was taken away.”

A spokeswoman for McGill’s said: “We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in an incident in Paisley town centre at approximately 12.15pm on Friday, when an elderly pedestrian walked into the side of our slow moving bus.

“We have cooperated fully with Police Scotland and provided CCTV footage from the bus involved, which has led to no charges against our driver.

“We wish the person involved a speedy recovery.”
