Any goal is a good goal

Gavin just wants to win today

- Craig Ritchie

Gavin Reilly watched on in awe as his Saints teammates swept home a stunner the last time they faced Dunfermline.

But he insists he couldn’t care less if the winner went in off of his backside when the two sides meet this afternoon.

Cammy Smith’s effort in January drew plaudits from across the globe, most notably from Spanish giants Barcelona, who took to social media to praise the Paisley side for the goal.

It proved to be crucial as Saints dug deep to claw out a 2-1 win to move them 11 points clear at the top of the table.

And, with the opportunity to make their lead at the summit double figures once again on the cards, Reilly insists“they all count”.

He said: “I didn’t actually realise how good a goal that was until I watched it back afterwards. When I saw it again, I thought ‘Wow...that was special’.

“The club Twitter feed tagged in Barcelona and they got a response, as it was a goal of their quality. It just shows the ability of players we have at St Mirren and another one like that would be great against Dunfermline.

“But I’ll be happy with any goal this time...I’d even be happy if it goes in off my backside. All that matters is winning and getting the three points.”

Reilly added: “It was a Friday night game live on the TV and the league was really tight back then.

“To go there, after getting beaten convincingly the last time was great.

“That was up there in the top three wins of the season – along with Inverness and Queen of the South when we were 2-0 down.”

With the weeks now counting down to the end of the season, Reilly revealed that talks have yet to open up about his future at the Buddies.

The St Mirren striker may currently top the club’s scoring charts with 21 league efforts. But having only penned a one-year deal in the summer, there is little over three months left to run on his deal.

He said: “I have had a wee think about things and spoken to my agent. I don’t want to get tied down to thinking about one thing.

“I am happy here and hopefully we can get talks going soon and see where that takes us.”
