SMITH’S LOVING HIS GOAL STREAK

DEFENDER DELIGHTED TO GET BACK ON THE SCORESHEET

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren full- back Liam Smith joked he may have had second thoughts about firing home Saints’ second goal had he seen Dunfermline defender Jean-Yves M’Voto closing him down.

Smith rifled home an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner to put the game beyond sight after Harry Davis had opened the scoring from the penalty spot just three minutes earlier.

The two quickfire second- half strikes were more than enough to sink to a sorry Dunfermline side whose wretched run of form sees them now without a win in seven.

For Smith, it was an unlikely second goal of the season having opened his account for the Buddies in the win over Queen of the South last month.

And he joked that he is simply making up for lost time having previously not scored for four years.

He said: “It had been a while since I last scored so to score twice in a few weeks is good for me but to contribute to the three points is the main thing.

“That’s two nice goals that I’ve scored now and if they keep coming I’ll be delighted.

“It fell to me nicely. My touch took it away and I had to hit and hope but luckily for me it landed in the bottom corner.

“I didn’t look at M’Voto otherwise I might not have hit it – he’s a big lad. But I just hit it and luckily for me it landed in the bottom corner.”

Victory for Saints moves them 11 points clear of nearest rivals Livingston, while Dundee United now sit 20 points behind – albeit with four games in hand.

But the full- back reckons the Paisley side are on course for promotion should they continue their good form over the course of the last nine games of the season.

Defeat to Livi three weeks ago, combined with a a narrow victory over Brechin City had seen some fans concerned that the pressure was getting to the leaders.

But the defender is adamant that the side are enjoying being at the league summit.

Smith added: “We got beaten by Livingston a few weeks ago and anybody can beat anybody on their day.

“But every time we’ve been beaten we’ve reacted well. If we can keep ticking the games off then there will only one place that we’ll be at the end of the season.”
