Terror on the train

Thug battered complete stranger

- Chris Taylor

A train passenger was left bloodied and battered when he was attacked by a complete stranger.

The victim was smashed in the face by a random traveller and repeatedly begged for mercy as they approached Johnstone railway station.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, violent 26- year- old thug Ben Flynn - who previously bottled someone - admitted the attack.

Flynn punched his victim, knocked his glasses off his face, stamped on the specs and then continued the onslaught.

The brutal incident was caught on CCTV.

A brute beat a train passenger to a pulp in front of terrified travellers.

Ben Flynn, 26, pummelled the man in the face as he screamed: “Stop, stop.”

The thug – who has a previous conviction for a bottle attack – sat calmly back in his seat when shocked commuters rushed to help his bloodied victim.

Flynn appeared shamefaced in the dock and handed over a letter admitting the attack at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Colin Wilson told how trouble flared as the train headed for Johnstone Rail Station.

He said: “A witness heard raised voices in the top carriage. “He heard, ‘f******g come on’. “When he turned around, he could see the man shouting was Ben Flynn.

“He was shouting an unnamed victim.

“Flynn punched him repeatedly to the head, knocking the glasses he was wearing to the floor.

“He stamped on the glasses, then continued to punch the victim.

“Witnesses observed the victim covering his face and head him saying, ‘stop, stop’.

“Flynn returned to his seat as other passengers intervened to help the man attacked.”

Carriage CCTV captured the brutal attack on camera last November 4.

The court heard the train was travelling from Glasgow to Ayr when Flynn pounced at Johnstone around 11.30pm.

The court heard a pal pulled Flynn away claiming: “It’s not worth it.”

British Transport Police traced the yob after quizzing the friend with a photo identification lineup.

Flynn claimed he had been spat on.

But Sheriff Colin Pettigrew insisted there was no evidence to suggest he had been assaulted.

He said: “You repeatedly punched this unnamed man on the haed to his injury.

“It’s your position this was caused by being spat at.

“Having read your letter, even if correct, and I only have your word for it, this gentleman did not spit more than once.

“You have a conviction for assault to severe injury involving a bottle.

“Taking everything into account, I am only just persuaded to deal with it by monetary penalty.”

Flynn, of Ayr, was fined £500.
