Yob trashed ex’s car with concrete slab

Accused lost plot after being dumped

- Chris Taylor

A thug slammed a slab through his ex’s windscreen after yelling: “Wait ‘ til you see this.”

James McCafferty, 37, also kicked the wing mirrors off Louise Wilson’s motor during a boozed-up rampage when he was binned.

He turned around to target the car after learning his victim’s brother had dropped it off after he left.

Prosecutor Joanne Gilmour told how he lost his temper after he was dumped after two years.

She said: “The accused and Ms Wilson had been in a relationship for two years. “He left the house. “The accused was seen to kick the wing mirrors off the car.

“He went away and returned seconds later with a large concrete slab above his head. “He shouted, ‘Wait ’til you see this’. “He threw it through the back window.”

McCafferty wandered from the house but turned back after the car was parked outside the flat in Johnstone’s Buchanan Street.

He hit the wing mirrors off the grey Vauxhall Astra and shouted for Ms Wilson to watch while he smashed the window.

Defence lawyer Peter Galletly claimed his client was turned down after he offered to pay for the damage.

He said: “The relationship seems to have been somewhat volatile.

“On the day in question, he had travelled through from Hamilton.

“They had both been consuming alcohol. “They entered into an argument. “He left and was walking to the train station, when, for some reason, he returned.”

McCafferty was traced by police hours after the drama around 6pm last December 30.

He told them: “I smashed the window when I was drunk.”

Sheriff Kevin Duffy ordered McCafferty to keep away from his former partner. He said: “You have pled guilty. “I am going to defer sentence on you for three months to see if you can be of good behaviour.

“There is to be no contact with this lady.”

McCafferty, of Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, has been told to return on June 11.
