Women’s Aid is apt beneficiary of lively awareness event
Women were celebrated at a special event held by the Paisley Burgh SNP branch.
Melissa Meighan, women and equalities officer, organised the event for International Women’s Day to collect products and raise money for the Paisley branch of Women’s Aid.
She said: “I wanted to raise awareness of different issues affecting women in society.
“I was elected to the position in January, and I don’t think members have ever held an event like this.
“With everything going on at the moment, women’s issues are really at the forefront in the media.”
Members of the SNP branch were invited along to the event and encouraged to bring a donation for the Renfrewshire branch of Women’s Aid.
Melissa said: “I had an information table highlighting different health concerns, encouraging women to get a smear test and not be embarrassed about these things.
“Primarily, the event was to raise money and collect items for Renfrewshire Women’s Aid.
“I spoke to staff there and asked them what was most needed.
“They said that while they always need sanitary products, they are also short of toiletries, like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and face wipes.
“We also held a bake sale and raised £125, which was presented to Women’s Aid with all products.
“I was really pleased at how well the event went.”
