Ryan’s just glad to be at Saints

- Craig Ritchie

January signing Ryan Flynn joked he wishes he had been at St Mirren longer as their sensational season continues.

Flynn, who joined from Oldham Athletic during the recent transfer window, has settled in well to a squad now sitting 10 points clear at the top.

Nine games are now all that stand between St Mirren and winning the Championship and sealing their return back to the top flight following three seasons away.

Flynn said: “Nine games to go – I sort of wish I came in earlier.

“I’m enjoying it and I am really loving it.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and I am just hoping to get over that line.

“We just need to keep winning games and doing our job.

“We focus on working hard every day and look forward to the games on a Saturday.”

Flynn was in superb form on Saturday as the Buddies recorded a 2- 0 win at the expense of Dunfermline at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

Slotting into the midfield alongside Stephen McGinn, Kyle Magennis and Cammy Smith, the winger played in a more central role than he had been used to.

But, following tricky weeks against Livingston and Brechin City, Flynn admits the side was just happy to prove the critics wrong following some rumblings during the 1- 0 victory over Brechin a fortnight ago.

Flynn added: “I am happy to make any contribution but the most important thing is the win.

“I thought we dominated from start to finish. To a man we were tremendous and it was a good three points.

“I think we play a lot of good football and we create a lot of chances.

“I suppose if people were questioning us after the Brechin game then we perhaps answered that with the win – but within the dressing room we were happy to beat Brechin.”

St Mirren return to Queen of the South this weekend for the first time since their comeback victory over Gary Naysmith’s side back in December.

Having been 2-0 down after just five minutes, Gary MacKenzie’s second half strike sealed an unlikely win.

And Flynn reckons they have learned from their mistakes.

He said: “I have enjoyed the games at home. This Saturday is different, going down to Queens on the astroturf. It will be different. It is never going to be an easy game down there, but the boys showed the character to come back just before Christmas.

“We know we need to start the game on the front foot.”
