Older guys are taking a step back in time to relive their footballing glory days.

Walking football for the over 50s has become a popular version of the beautiful game which is being played at Barrhead Foundry every week.

Organised by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure ( ERCL), the games are on a Friday between 1pm and 2pm, attract players in their 50s, 60s and even a few in their 70s.

A second walking football session is also held at Mearns Primary School, on a Tuesday night between 7.30pm and 9pm.

The games are organised by ERCL’s football development co-ordinator, Peter Dunn.

He said: “Our walking football games have become very popular and we’ve a total of 30 players who regularly come along to the sessions.

“It’s basically a game played to fivea-side rules, but you have to play at a walking pace and no running is allowed.

“It’s great for older people who still want to keep active, but may not be as fit as they used to be, have problems with their joints, or are even recovering from heart problems.

“The games are still quite competitive and there’s a lot of skill on show. You have to be skilful as since you can’t run to chase a pass. You have to make sure that the ball is given to feet, so accuracy is important.”

He added: “It’s a very social activity as lots of the guys are meeting up with old team-mates, or opponents they haven’t seen for years. After the games there are lots of tales of past glories on the football parks of East Renfrewshire being swapped.”

Anyone interested in taking part should simply turn up at the venues and pay on the day. Sessions cost £3 at Barrhead Foundry and £4 at Mearns Primary.
