Skipper: Title victory would surpass the lot

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren skipper Stephen McGinn insists lifting the Championship trophy would be the proudest moment of his career.

The midfielder has marshalled the Saints throughout a sterling league campaign, which has them currently sitting 12 points clear of secondplaced Livingston in the table.

McGinn has been central to the turnaround in Saints’ fortunes having returned to the club from Wycombe Wanderers last January.

Having beaten the odds to avoid the drop to SPFL League One, with a draw with champions Hibs on the last game of the season, St Mirren have only gone from strength to strength in a stunning 12 months.

The finishing line is now in sight with Saints needing just 13 points to seal the title.

And McGinn says lifitng the trophy aloft would top off what has been the best year of his successful career.

He told Express Sport: “I thought the achievement at the end of last season would have been really hard to beat. Where we came from and the run we went on, it has been so relentless.

“It has almost been like a continued season for the boys from last year, it sort of blends into one because we have just kept it going from last season.

“If we can finish this job off then it would be the proudest moment, and 18 months, of my career so far.

“The boys have been magnificent up until now and it is just a case of keeping that going.

“We have a lot to be proud of and there has been a lot to get excited about for the past year or so now.

“We are getting closer to our end game but it has been so exciting along the way.”

St Mirren face a Saturday without a game this weekend with their scheduled clash with Falkirk cancelled due to international call- ups for Lewis Morgan, Kyle Magennis and Liam Smith.

Having had time to cast a close eye on just how well the club has been doing, McGinn is keen for the side to continue their rich vein of form when they return to action on Tuesday night against Dumbarton.

He added: “I seen a stat the other day that we have picked up 34 points from the last 39. I mean that is really difficult to compete with.

“We are really proud of that and really proud of the home record we have as well. The defensive record we have got as well is fantastic and we will be looking to extend that next week against Dumbarton.”
