Firm gives charity a boost

-

A cancer charity for children has been given a boost by Scotland’s centre of procurement expertise for local government.

Scotland Excel, based in Cotton Street, Paisley, has handed over a £3,795 cheque to Calum’s Cabin.

The cash was raised through a raffle at its recent Supplier Excellence Awards that were held in Glasgow and hosted by Deacon Blue’s Dougie Vipond.

Calum’s Cabin is a holiday retreat on the Isle of Bute that enables children with cancer to spend time with their families and make irreplaceable memories.

It was set up in memory of Calum Speirs, who passed away at the age of 12 after battling a brain tumour.

Calum came up with the idea of Calum’s Cabin before he lost his battle in February 2007.

After a major fundraising push by his family, the cabin opened its doors to its first family two years after Calum passed away.

Calum’s mum Caroline said: “I would like to thank Scotland Excel for selecting it as their chosen charity for the Supplier Excellence Awards Dinner and Ceremony.

“It was an honour to attend the event and speak to the audience about Calum’s Cabin.

“The funds raised on the evening were fantastic and I can’t thank everyone enough for their generous donations. The money will make a huge difference to so many families.”

Julie Welsh, director of Scotland Excel, added: “We are delighted with the total raised for this extremely worthwhile charity.

“The donations will go a long way in helping Calum’s Cabin to meet its ongoing running costs and to continue to provide much-needed support to children who are battling cancer.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Brakes Scotland, Kibble Education and Care Centre and the Radisson Blu, Glasgow, for the fantastic prizes they donated.”
