Firms raided as tax chiefs check on workers Cops join Paisley crackdown

- David Campbell

Cops and taxmen quizzed firms during a cash in hand crackdown yesterday.

Police swooped on businesses in surprise checks on staff.

Officers were backed- up by HMRC for probes into payments.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, told how units targeted companies across the town.

She said: “We carried out a pre-planned day of action along with HMRC officials, visiting local businesses.

“This local initiative was lead by our officers with the support of HMRC staff.

“We were carrying out checks that business are complying with the law and offering advice where necessary. If you have any concerns at all about the way businesses are operating then we would like to hear from you.”

The taskforce looks into a slew of suspected offences, including theft, fuel fraud and tax evasion.

Officers also investigate breaches of minimum wage rules and fire safety legislation.

Among those visited was Hannan’s Proper Car Wash.

Seven cops were joined by tax officials at the St James’ Street premises. They spoke with staff before heading to other firms nearby. It is understood no arrests were made.

HMRC would not be drawn on the day of action.

But it confirmed it was involved in targeted sessions across the region.

Last week police teamed- up with immigration officers earlier for checks on businesses.

Two men, aged 28 and 47, were found working illegally at the Red Cap chinese takeaway in Broomlands Street.

They have been detained and will be reported to border chiefs. Kitchen bosses face a fine of up to £40,000.

The Paisley Daily Express was unable reach Hannan’s Proper Car Wash for comment.

If you have any information on businesses operating illegally, call Police Scotland on 101.
