Couple reach final of radio contest to win their big day

- Kathleen Speirs

A pair of lovebirds could be celebrating their wedding in a luxury setting free of charge – after reaching the final of a nationwide competition.

Danielle Smith and Gavin Sloan, from Linwood, are in the running to scoop an all-expenses paid wedding ceremony and reception.

The doting parents are down to the final five of Heart Radio’s Bridal Idol competition.

In a bid to win the wedding of their dreams, the couple must now raise as much money as possible for charity.

Danielle, 26, told the Express she did not expect to get this far.

“I saw a link to the competition on Facebook and applied on a whim,” she said.

“Without telling Gavin I filled out the application form not thinking that anything would come of it.

“Now we’ve reached this stage I can’t believe we could actually have a free wedding, it’s amazing.”

Tying the knot had been put on hold for the young couple after they became parents to Keelan, five, and Callie, two.

Juggling work, looking after young children and applying for college courses meant that for Danielle and labourer Gavin, a wedding was at the bottom of their to-do list.

“We always wanted to get married and new it would eventually happen,” Danielle added. “With everything going on it was just put off. “The two of us would love to get married. “For me it’s the last piece in the jigsaw to complete our family unit.”

Danielle’s story caught the attention of bosses at Heart Radio placing her and Gavin in the final five.

The pair now have until April 9 to raise as much money as possible for the station’s charity Global’s Make Some Noise.

The organisation supports small charities which help youngsters and their families living with illness, disability or lack of opportunity.

Hoping to raise the most funs and secure a luxury wedding in Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel, Danielle thinks it would be a ‘win-win situation’.

“We could never ever afford a wedding like this,” she added.

“You get a full food and drinks package for 50 guests and a dress up to the value of £1,200 plus kilt hire for five people.

“It would be amazing for all our friends and family, especially our children.

“Not only that but Global’s Make Some Noise does amazing work.

“To know that you’re helping those less fortunate in the process makes it more special.”

Raising £ 700 so far through bonus ball competitions, the determined duo have a charity football match on the horizon and a charity night at St Peter’s Club in Glenburn on April 7.
