Flashback It’s never been easy at Brechin

-

A trip to the Glebe is never one to look forward to... not unless you can potentially win the league there.

St Mirren head to Brechin this Saturday for another game that could go a long way towards winning the league.

Or depending on results tomorrow night, it may well be the scene of a promotion party.

Darren Dods’ outfit side have yet to win a game this season but that isn’t to say that they won’t give St Mirren a hard game.

At the end of the day, the previous three fixtures they have contested this season have all been tense affairs.

Back in 2009 two divisions separated the sides, with Saints in the top flight and Brechin in League One.

But the luck of the draw paired the duo together in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup – with current Cup drama

St Mirren FC is a club with a proud tradition — and a history to match.

They have been at the centre of the Scottish game since their formation in 1877.

Today, we look back at a day in 2009 when St Mirren made the long journey to Brechin for a banana-skin cup tie.

Morton boss Jim Duffy taking to the dugout for the first time having been installed as City’s new gaffer.

Saints would prevail 3-1, but it was another tricky encounter for the SPL men, who were given a brief scare.

The Buddies threatened early on when free-kicks from Stephen McGinn and Franco Miranda put Chris McCluskey in goal under some pressure.

Swapping Beunos Aires for Brechin... Miranda must have had a shock to the system.

At the other end, Brechin were trying to make an impression on their new gaffer but Kevin Byers failed to trouble Mark Howard in the St Mirren goal.

Saints eventually took the lead in 25 minutes when Jim Hamilton converted from the spot after Andy Dorman had been brought down by defender John Ward.

Dennis Wyness should have doubled the lead before half time but he somehow only fired into the side-netting despite finding himself unmarked.

But there was a scare one minute after the restart when former Hearts man Neil Janczyk volleyed high into the back of the net following Gary Twigg’s nod.

However, Saints were back in front after McCluskey dropped Miranda’s cross and Wyness drove home from 10 yards.

And McCluskey was again to blame as Hamilton rounded things off with a tap-in after the keeper collided with his centre back.

St Mirren: Mark Howard, Jack Ross, John Potter, Scott Cuthbert, Franco Miranda, Hugh Murray, Steven Thomson (Tom Brighton 76), Andy Dorman, Stephen McGinn, Jim Hamilton (Steven Robb 76), Dennis Wyness.

Subs not used: Chris Smith, Gary Mason, and Garry Brady.
