We’re a step closer for Leighanne... but we need your help

Desperate family’s funding plea

- Kathleen Speirs

The family of a courageous mum who is fighting brain cancer is one step closer to saving her life.

A cancer centre in Germany has given Leighanne Sanderson and her loved ones the green light for her to receive specialist treatment.

The 38-year-old mum of one, who is battling stage four brain cancer, has been given between two and four months to live by NHS doctors.

After discovering treatment from Hallwang Private Oncology Clinic in Dornstetten, Germany, could cure her, it sparked a fundraising campaign: Let’s Get Leighanne to Germany.

In just six weeks, family and friends in her hometown of Renfrew have raised almost £14,000.

This week Leighanne’s determined sister Katie Sanderson received confirmation from Germany that brings them renewed hope.

In a post on Facebook Katie wrote: “So today I received the news that I have be longing for.

“To say I’m totally overwhelmed is an understatement.

“Germany has been in contact with me giving me a strategy plan for treatment and costs too.”

It was estimated that treatment from Hallwang could cost between £80,000 and £90,000.

Katie’s post continued: “I knew the costs would be expensive.

“I can now confirm the cost is £90,000 for my sister’s treatment.

“The problem I now face is that it’s £72,000 up front for this treatment, which is the downfall.”

Despite needing to raise a colossal amount in a short period of time, Katie remains positive.

Determined to do everything in her power to save her sister, she has organised a number of successful charity events.

Famous faces such as Frank McAvennie, Derek Ferguson and Rudi Vata took to the pitch at Renfrew Leisure Centre for an Old Firm Legends match last month.

Katie and her team of supporters have arranged another 16 fundraisers for the coming months.

“Leighanne and my nephew Kieran, 14, are over the moon to finally here this news,” she added. “There were tears all round. “I won’t stop, with the total amount raised sitting at £13,500 just now.

“I now ask all family, friends and everyone else able to help to please do so to raise this money ASAP.

“My sister needs this treatment and I need your help to get her to Germany.

“So, from the bottom of my heart, please, please help me to do this. “Every little helps.”  To donate to the official Just Giving page visit www.justgiving. com/ crowdfunding/ kathleensanderson.
