Drivers raced right into path of cops Strangers hauled into court for speeding

- Chris Taylor

Two strangers were pulled over in separate cars after they tore past police at more than 100mph.

Jason Wilson, 31, and John Weir, 50, were nabbed after trailing each other as they bombed by cops in the dark.

The pair were hauled into the dock together to face a careless driving rap at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Both pled guilty and admitted they had never met each other before.

Prosecutor Emma Jeffrey told how both men rushed through traffic on the A737.

She said: “Police were on uniform patrol in an unmarked car.

“They were travelling east towards Linwood when they observed bright lights in their rearview mirror.

“As the car passed by, they noted it to be a black Volkswagen Golf.

“A silver Volkswagen Golf followed immediately behind it.

“Police thought both were driving at excessive speed and had to increase their own speed to 100mph to catch up.”

Wilson sped by the Barrochan Interchange and Linclive Interchange in the pitch black, with Weir following just behind.

Driving conditions were treacherous, with plunging temperatures creating an ice risk on the soaking roads last November 12.

The pair raced by other drivers before they were pulled over around 5.20pm.

The court heard Wilson had lost his licence for six months after the stunt due to totting up rules.

Defence lawyer Peter Galletly pleaded for him to keep his licence to help his family.

He said: “He has a partner and two young children, aged five and three.

“He recognises how important his licence is to him.

“He has dyslexia and mental health problems.

“He finds it difficult to be in the company of other people and in public and public transport.”

Solicitor Martin Black represented Weir and said he needs his car for work at the William Tracey recycling plant in Linwood.

He said: “It’s a matter of regret and embarrassment.

“He’s been driving for 33 years and has a clean licence.”

Sheriff James Spy slapped both men with seven points.

He said: “I see no reason to differentiate between the two as to the state of their driving.”

Wilson, of Graham Street, Johnstone, and Weir, of Willow Park, Johnstone, were also fined £450 each.
