Sick thug kicked and lashed out at girlfriend

- Chris Taylor

A dad- of- two spat in his girlfriend’s face after he staggered in drunk in the middle of the night.

Robert Slaven, 30, gobbed on Jennifer McGarrie and shoved her into a radiator after she told him to leave because he was sozzled.

He booted her after he sent her tumbling to the floor and only stopped when a neighbour heard her screaming and called police.

The brute was ordered to carry out community service after admitting domestic assault when he was hauled into Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Martina McGuigan told how the thug turned violent.

She said: “His partner was woken when she heard his voice outside.

“She was going up to go to the bathroom and heard him struggling to get in.

“She opened the door and both went upstairs. “She told him to go away. “Ms McGarrie went into her room and called his sister asking her to collect him because of his state.

“He began to ask who she was on the phone to. He spat in her face as she lay on the bed.”

Ms McGarrie tried to escape by moving to a different room.

But the yob followed her and began lashing out.

Ms McGuigan added: “She got up and went into her daughter’s bedroom – he followed her.

“She moved downstairs and told him to get out because he was drunk.

“The abuse continued and he pushed her against a kitchen radiator.

“This caused her to fall to the ground. “He kicked her on the leg.” Ms McGarrie fled to the close’s verandah and tried to lock the door in Johnstone’s Clyde Place around 5.30am last November 18.

Slaven followed and began jostling her and trying to stop her from getting back inside.

Defence lawyer Alastair Gray says his client wants to split from his victim.

He said: “He accepts this clearly is a matter that will cause the court serious concern.

“He’s learned through his mum that his partner has expressed a desire to rekindle the relationship.

“He has taken the mature view that they perhaps are not compatible.”

Sheriff David Pender told Slaven to attend alcohol counselling and warned he would be sent to prison for any repeat offence.

He said: “I have to say it is a very close call that I am not imposing a custodial sentence.

“This was a very nasty assault on somebody you live with and are supposed to be caring for.”

Slaven, now of Etterick Terrace, has been placed under supervision and ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work in nine months.
