Roads mayhem after spate of accidents

-

Renfrewshire commuters were left stewing in lengthy tailbacks after a morning of traffic chaos yesterday.

Several incidents on major routes connecting the region to Glasgow brought vehicles to a standstill.

Just after 7am traffic started to build when an accident took place on the M8 eastbound between junction 19 and 18 which closed one lane for around 15 minutes.

Shortly after that a breakdown on the M8 Kingston Bridge western approach closed two lanes eastbound.

At 7.35am, Traffic Scotland then reported a broken down HGV on the M8 eastbound at junction 21 Seaward Street just before the Kingston Bridge.

Two of three lanes were blocked on the busy stretch of motorway as police rushed to the scene.

The incident at junction 21 created more disruption on the M77 at around 8am with vehicles crawling northbound into Glasgow from junction 4 Crookfur to the M8 merge at junction 22.

Adding to the build-up was a traffic light failure on the other side of the Erskine Bridge at the Kilbowie Roundabout on the A82, which caused delays on the bridge going northbound.

As the clock approached 9am, with hundreds of motorists still stuck on the M8, an accident on the A737 between the slip for the A762 for Elderslie and the B789 for Johnstone restricted vehicles in both directions for around 15 minutes.

One motorist stuck on the A737 told the Paisley Daily Express: “It was absolute chaos.

“The whole stretch was at a total standstill.

“Even as I came off the motorway and drove through Paisley is was still really busy.

“Everyone clearly had the same idea which caused even more disruption. “It was ridiculous.” At 9.14am chaos continued after a vehicle overturned on the A737 near Linwood, closing all lanes heading southbound.

It was after 10.30am before lanes one and two re-opened.

Finally, another broken-down motor partially blocked the carriageway on the M8 eastbound at junction 20.
