Squad could win league at the weekend

Kelburne Hockey Club could wrap up the First Division title this weekend having been made to wait last time around.

The Paisley side, on the hunt for their 13th successive national title, were in action just once last weekend as they turned out on Saturday to register a 3-1 victory over Edinburgh University in the capital to keep their charge on course.

However, a win for near rivals Grange last Sunday, a 4-2 victory at Hillhead, means that the celebrations were put on hold for another week.

Grange remain within touching distance of Kelburne. However, the remain two points adrift of the champions.

Victory for Kelburne at Uddingston tomorrow afternoon should be enough to see them over the line.

Elsewhere, Tayside Western Wildcats have secured their top-four spot with a 2-1 victory over Dundee Wanderers. It didn’t look promising for Wildcats coach Harry Dunlop when the home side held a single-goal advantage at the interval.

But Wildcats levelled when Andrew McConnell converted a cross from Nikki Homfray then with six minutes left, the same player put his side 2-1 ahead with a powerful drag flick at a penalty corner. However, that was not the end of the drama as Wildcats keeper Gavin Sommerville was called into action to save from the spot. Then, in the closing moments, Wanderers failed to take advantage of two overtime penalty corners.

Meanwhile, Grove Menzieshill returned to winning ways on Sunday with a narrow 3-2 win over Uddingston at Tayside but the third-placed side had to recover from a single goal deficit at half-time.

Meanwhile, both Clydesdale and Edinburgh University remain midtable after they drew 2-2 at Titwood.
