£1,300 cash boost for hospice on the cards
Accord wins out in charity poker competition
There were certainly no poker faces in sight when a bumper cheque was handed over to one of Paisley’s favourite charities.
More than £1,300 was given to Accord Hospice after Renfrew Rotary Club and MTTP Poker League got together to organise a charity competition.
It took place last month in Priorscroft Bowling Club to raise funds for Accord and Mary’s Meals.
The event was a great success, with 84 players from all over the UK taking part – and it raised £2,726.94 in total.
The organisers are planning to make it even bigger next year.
The cheque to Accord was handed over by David Atkinson of Renfrew Rotary Club and Michael Campbell of MTTP Poker League, who were thrilled to be involved.
Accord Hospice has been in existence for more than 30 years and in that time has grown to become a major provider of endof-life care at its base in Hawkhead Road and in people’s own homes.
The charity says it aims to ensure that care is safe, effective and “person-centred” by encouraging staff to maintain and add to their knowledge and skills, resulting in a well trained and experienced multi-disciplinary team of staff and volunteers.
Thousands of pounds are raised every year for Accord either by ordinary members of the public whose relatives have been cared for by the hospice or by those who simply want to help.
Ken Mathie, head of income generation at Accord, said: “We were delighted to welcome David and Michael, both of whom have their own businesses in Paisley to the hospice when they presented me with a cheque for £1363.47.
“We are very grateful both to them and to everyone who took part for raising such a wonderful amount.
“I would also like to thank all of the sponsors and Christine Burns who provided the catering who supported the event to ensure that as much money as possible would go to both good causes.”
