Thug tore out his mum’s hair during sick attack

Bully spared jail for booze-fuelled assault shame

A brute who pulled out clumps of his own mother’s hair during a drunken assault has been spared jail.

Paul McGuigan, 35, was warned he came close to being jailed for attacking his mother Janette in her own home.

McGuigan laid into his mum at a house at Yew Place, in Johnstone, in a boozed-fuelled frenzy.

He grabbed her by her head and pulled her hair so roughly that clumps of it were wrenched from her scalp. He also pushed her against a door and shoved her against a wall, causing her to fall to the floor, all to her injury.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, he appeared for sentencing after pleading guilty to the assault which happened on December 2, last year.

Defence agent Jacqueline Jobson told the court that McGuigan, who has been blighted by alcohol abuse, was deeply ashamed of the attack.

She added he had accepted responsibility for the assault by pleading guilty and she urged the court to consider handing him a community- based disposal combining unpaid work and supervision.

She said because he was in full time employment he would be able to pay a fine.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew slated the accused, telling him he came very close to sending him to jail.

He said: “I will impose a Community Payback Order lasting 18 months with unpaid work set at a high tariff.

“It was for 300 hours, but because you pleaded guilty it will reduced to 270 hours to be completed within 12 months.

“You will also pay £ 500 compensation to your mother.”

Sheriff Pettigrew also placed McGuigan on a Restriction of Liberty Order for three months requiring him to wear an electronic tag monitoring his movements.

He also ordered the yob, formerly of Yew Place, but now staying at Clavens Road, Hillington, to attend alcohol counselling sessions.

McGuigan was also ordered to appear for a review of his behaviour in three months time.
