Kieron Rocks on with new Glasgow contract

Renfrew ace pens deal

- Craig Ritchie

Renfrew basketball star Kieron Achara has penned a new deal with basketball franchise, the Glasgow Rocks.

Scotland captain Achara led the national side to a fourth placed finish at last month’s Commonwealth Games, where they just missed out on a medal following defeats to Australia and New Zealand.

His star qualities on the court have earned him a new contract with the Glasgow side, as he joined head coach Darryl Wood and Scotland teammate Gareth Murray in pledging his future with the Emirates Arena side.

Achara said: “I’m thankful to get another opportunity to play for the Rocks and I hope that it continues way past my playing career.

“We are building something special here in Glasgow and I love that I am getting to be a part of that.”

Elsewhere, Darryl Wood started the 2017/18 season as the Rocks assistant coach and took over the helm upon the departure of Tony Garbelotto. Since taking over as head coach he has recorded seven wins in 11 games.

The final piece in the three point puzzle is that of Glasgow Rocks’ recently voted MVP, Gareth Murray, who has also signed on the dotted line for the 2018/19 season, making it a trifecta of signings for the Rocks.

Head of Performance at basketballscotland, Barry Lang is excited to see Scotland’s professional franchise investing in Scottish talent.

He added: “It’s great to see that Glasgow Rocks believe in these three guys. Kieron is a great role model, Gareth is a warrior on court and Darryl is a highly motivated young coach. The fact that the franchise are investing in Scottish Talent, proves their commitment to the sport and I hope this, plus our success at the Commonwealth Games, will inspire the next generation of players and coaching staff.”
