Wife invites friends to pay tribute to late husband

- Kenneth Speirs

People are being invited to pay tribute to a Paisley man on what would have been his 70th birthday.

Former newsagent David Faulds died suddenly in December last year.

And his wife Frances Maguire is holding a celebration of his life at the Watermill Hotel on Thursday.

She said: “My husband lived all his life in Paisley and died in December last year in Inverness, having moved to Nairn when we met eight years ago.

“He knew so many people in Paisley from working at his newsagent and working at John Menzies delivering the papers.

“I’m holding a very informal memorial service on what would have been his 70th birthday for those who couldn’t get to the funeral.”

Mr Faulds ran the D C Faulds & Son newsagent’s shop in Ladyburn Street for many years until a decline in business led him to sell the shop.

After this he worked nights for John Menzies delivering papers and magazines.

He was unmarried into his sixties until he met Frances on a walking holiday in Arran.

Marriage soon followed, and they set up home in Nairn.

Mrs Faulds said: “We were married for just five years.

“When we met I was 44 and he was 62 but he didn’t look it.

“In fact, I made him show me his driving licence to prove his age.”

She added: “I realised pretty quickly that David was special.

“He wasn’t a religious man but he was a good man, and he saw the good in every person he met.

“Neither of us had been married previously.

“David had lived with his parents until they died.

“He’d also never been in a very serious relationship before, so his marriage proposal took a few hints and a few stiff drinks. “But it worked.” Mrs Faulds says she would be delighted if anyone who knew David could find some time to meet her at the remembrance event at the Watermill hotel on Thursday between noon and 2pm.

Anyone who knew David as a neighbour in Ralston or Meikleriggs, worked beside him, was a customer at his shop, or knew him at Camphill High School, where he was a pupil from 1960 to 1964, will be most welcome.
