Meet Mini Meghan and Handsome Harry

Pupils stage their own version of the big wedding

- Alison Rennie

With the royal wedding just a few days away, these schoolkids were getting into the mood by staging their own ceremony.

But it’s unlikely we’ll see an exchange of Haribo rings and the Birdie Song as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first dance on Saturday.

Primary one pupils from Arkleston Primary School were excited about the impending wedding, so class teachers Louise Farrell and Lorna McManus decided to get involved.

Louise said: “Because the royal wedding is coming up, the children had picked up on it in the news. We’re led by whatever the children are talking about so we learned about planning a wedding, the Royal Family and wedding traditions around the world.

“We planned our own wedding ceremony and the Glynhill Hotel kindly gave us their barony suite and put on teas and coffees for the parents.”

The pupils went along to Renfrew North Church in the morning for a wedding rehearsal and Reverend Philip Wallace told them all about what it would be like. He then joined the event in the afternoon at the Glynhill Hotel.

The happy couple – Amber Lavery was Meghan and Euan Dougall was Harry – and their guests were piped into the ceremony by Andrew McCrindle, a former Arkleston Primary pupil who’s now in third year at Renfrew High. Logan McLaren acted as the officiant.

The pupils wrote their own vows, which included promises to be kind and respectful and to be best friends forever. They then swapped Haribo rings.

Their first dance was The Time of My Life which then turned into the Birdie Song. They also did the St Bernard’s Waltz and the Military Two Step and the last song was Loch Lomond by Runrig.

Parents and grandparents provided all the home baking and enjoyed watching the ceremony.

Class teacher Louise Farrell said: “It was really good. The children were amazing.

“They worked so hard to get it to such a high standard and the parents really enjoyed it too.”

All the children wore their best clothes for the happy occasion and enjoyed dancing at the disco after the ceremony.

Louise added: “They were wild. It was great. They all danced their socks off.”
