Uni duo gain accolade for book on Holocaust Academics honoured for outstanding publication
A book about the Holocaust by two Paisley academics has won an award.
Dr Paula Cowan and Professor Henry Maitles of University of the West of Scotland picked up the Outstanding Publication 2017 award at the recent CiCea ( Children’s Identity and Citizenship European Association) conference.
Their book, Understanding and Teaching Holocaust Education, is aimed at student teachers, recently qualified primary and secondary teachers who are interested in teaching the Holocaust, as well as teachers with responsibility for history, citizenship and religious education, and museum curators who work in this area.
The book focuses on issues in Holocaust Education that are being discussed in today’s primary and secondary schools and provides practical approaches and useful resources for teachers and educators.
The first chapters focus on curricular considerations relating to the contribution of Holocaust Education to history, citizenship education and religious and moral education and theoretical issues such as the different expressions of anti-semitism in society today and international perspectives of Holocaust remembrance.
The remaining chapters focus on practical issues, such as the contribution of fiction, interdisciplinary learning and pupil visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau to Holocaust Education.
Dr Paula Cowan said: “We are delighted to receive this award.
“We were determined that our book presented a wide European perspective of Holocaust education and to receive an award from CiCeA, a European association that focuses on citizenship education in young people in Europe, demonstrates our success in this.”
Professor Maitles added: “It is great to have our work recognised in this way by our peers. The interest we have received regarding our book has been great.
“Holocaust education is hugely important and we hope that our book will play an important role in creating a better understanding of approaches to teaching in this field.”
CiCea is the Association focusing on citizenship education and identity formation in young people in Europe and the world.
