Drunken bigot hurled abuse at RAH doc
Police called to A & E department
A boozed- up bigot who sparked chaos at Paisley’s A&E department has been slated by a sheriff.
Scott Campbell, 46, shouted and swore abuse at a doctor attempting to treat him and then hurled threats and sectarian slurs at cops who were called to calm him down at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard Campbell had been taken to casualty incoherent through drink, but lost the plot when he began sobering up.
Fiscal depute Tom Bowman said: “Campbell was taken from his home address to hospital in a heavily intoxicated state. “He was barely conscious. “He was taken to the RAH to be assessed and left in the care of staff there.
“He began sobering up. He became aware of his surroundings in the hospital.
“He was being seen by a doctor when he became aggressive and started shouting and swearing at the doctor.
“Shouting ‘f*** off,’ ‘get to f***,’ and presenting himself aggressively.”
The court heard Campbell of Queen Street in the town, got even more out of control, leaving medics in a state of fear and alarm, during the incident which happened on 11 January this year.
The fiscal added: “He behaviour deteriorated so police were contacted.
“Officers attended at 5.15pm and spoke to Campbell who was still extremely intoxicated.
“He became hostile towards police, shouting and swearing at them with phrases such as ‘f*** off,’ ‘f*** off you c***,’ ‘I will f****** batter you.’
“He was warned about his conduct several times. He refused to comply. He was pointing directly at officers.
“He was apprehended but then tensed his body to resist the application of handcuffs.
“He made a motion as if to go to the door when he was placed in the prone position.
“Then he began shouting ‘f*** off you F*****n c***’ and called officers ‘f***** b*******.’”
The court heard Campbell was detained but due to his level of intoxication and aggression, he was not cautioned and charged.
The accused pled guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm in that he shouted, swore, uttered threats and made sectarian remarks towards to police, and that he shouted and swore at a doctor, a member of staff treating him at Paisley’s RAH.
Defence agent James Arrol urged court to hand his client a community based disposal despite his record of committing previous drunken disturbances.
He said: “He understands this is a serious offence.
“An offence ordinarily where your lordship may consider custody.
“He has analogous previous convictions, this may give your lordship cause for concern.”
Previously Campbell terrorised his frail and elderly parents by throwing furniture around their home.
The jobless yob is supposed to be their carer, supporting them, running errands and doing housework.
Sheriff James Spy said he came close to jailing Campbell.
“He said: “It is with considerable hesitation that I will make a Community Payback Order with supervision and it will be as alternative to custody.
“There will be a special requirement to deal with your alcohol issues and mental health.”
He handed him 220 hours of unpaid work to be completed within 10 months.
