Tony: Plans are in motion despite Ross speculation

- David Campbell

St Mirren supremo Tony Fitzpatrick insists the club is focused on building for the season ahead despite speculation surrounding manager Jack Ross’ future.

Club bosses moved quickly to tie down senior stars Stephen McGinn and Craig Samson on new deals and insist work behind the scenes is gathering pace for the season ahead.

For Saints chief executive, it is business as usual despite uncertainty surrounding the future of Ross, who has been heavily linked with a move to English Championship side Ipswich Town.

However, Fitzpatrick insists plans are well underway as the club look to build a squad capable of competing in the top flight.

Fitzpatrick believes keeping the nucleus of last year’s title-winning side together – coupled with some new additions – will see the Paisley outfit become a force to be reckoned with.

He said: “Jack knows who he wants to keep and we are working hard to do that. And there are exciting times ahead bringing new players in.”

Fitzpatrick hailed the influence of goalkeeper Samson who has committed himself to the club until the summer of 2020.

He said: “Sammy’s penalty save against Dundee United won us the league. After that I started to really believe.”

Fitzpatrick aims to reassure supporters that all is in order as they look to tie down a number of other senior stars as Ross and the club’s board look to shape the squad for their return to the Premiership.

“It would be good to get some of the other boys signed up because they have been fantastic for this club. We have to bring in new players for the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.

As excitement for a return to the top flight builds, Fitzpatrick added: “I wish the new season was starting today and I think the players are the same. We’re finally back where we belong.”
