Paisley baby store under threat

-

The future of the Mothercare store in Paisley is unde r threat after bosses announced they are to close 50 shops UK-wide.

The move, which will put 800 jobs at risk across the country, comes as the baby products retailer said it was in a“perilous” financial position.

By 2020 there will be just 78 stores left.

The closure plan, plus a plan to cut rents at 21 of its stores, is being carried out through what is known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA).

A spokesman for Mothercare refused to confirm whether the Paisley store was one of those earmarked for closure.

He said:“We can’t comment on individual store closures until all staff have been informed, which is our absolute priority.

“Of course we regret having to close stores and the impact this will have on colleagues.

“However, we had no alternative to executing a CVA.

“The business was in an unsustainable situation and was in clear need of an appropriate resolution and today’s comprehensive measures provide a renewed and stable financial structure for the business and will allow Mothercare to accelerate its adaptation to the shifting dynamic towards online.”

The spokesman also refused to say how many people work at the Paisley store, but it is understood to be no more than 10.
