New jobs on the menu as coffee shop expands

Elderslie cafe set for High Street

- Chris Taylor

18.05.2018 Elderslie Coffee Shop has been given the go-ahead to open a deli and hire seven extra staff.

The firm applied to take over a prime corner spot in the middle of Johnstone town centre.

Councillors look set to rubberstamp the expansion plans after backing from experts.

Fraser Carlin, head of planning and housing for Renfrewshire Council, revealed his decision in a letter to cafe bosses.

He said: “The proposed use would not be out of character with the surrounding area in terms of compatibility.

“It is considered the proposal would enhance and regenerate the vitality of the area, bringing economic benefit to the centre.

“It is considered that the proposal would not have a significantly detrimental impact on the amenity of the area or harm the character of the area.

“It is recommended that the proposal be granted, subject to conditions.”

Elderslie Coffee Shop wants to transform the former Delectables diner on High Street.

It has planned a major renovation inside and out if plans are approved by councillors.

Planners say the deli must only use a hot plate, bain marie, soup kettle microwave, baked potato oven and panini and toastie maker.

Its opening hours will also be restricted to 6.30am to 5pm every day.

Bosses will rebrand their cafe business as Elderslie Coffee Co.

They set out their the vision for the business in a report lodged with planners.

It stated: “The existing wellknown premises located on the corner of the High Street trades as Delectables coffee shop.

“The new operator seeks to expand the offer to allow hot food takeaway items, such as teas, specialist coffees, sandwiches, paninis and hot- filled rolls.

“They also seek to refurbish the existing interior and exterior with a significant investment to a new brand, Elderslie Coffee Company.

“It will be an extension of their existing shop at Stoddard Square.

“In addition, they seek to increase the existing staff by another three full-time positions and four part-time positions.”

The firm also runs a village cafe and award-winning butchers next door.

The firm opened the Butchers Steak and Grill last summer – earning rave reviews.

Around 30 workers are employed across the coffee shop, butchers and restaurant.

The Butchers Bar and Grill serves the same aged beef steaks and burgers sold from the shop in Stoddard Square.

It became the hottest spot in the region and attracted 900 bookings in the days ahead of its grand opening last June.

Elderslie Coffee Shop already has a presence in Johnstone and sponsors Thorn Athletic Football Club’s youth side.
