John pleads for fly-tipping crackdown

- Alison Rennie

A community activist has found piles of dumped tyres, gas canisters, rotten furniture and even a smashed toilet during a walk in Ferguslie Park.

Keen photographer David Cameron was in the Inkerman area of Ferguslie Park to photograph some wildlife and plants but was met with the fly-tipping.

Now he and Ferguslie Park Community Council have pleaded with Renfrewshire Council bosses to help them do something about the dumped rubbish scarring their community.

Mr Cameron said: “I went out there to take some photos of the plant life and spotted the fly-tipping. I thought it was such a mess, something should be done about it.

“I grew up in Ferguslie Park and remember spuds and turnips growing here.

“Each time I take a wander around these old fields I find endless piles of tyres which have been set on fire scarring the land.

“Renfrewshire Council is forever calling on the public to clean up their street for free.

“I’m calling on Renfrewshire Council to block or gate the entrances into the fields before someone is seriously hurt.”

Inkerman is an area off Blackstoun Road next to the A737 which was once home to miners and shale coal mines but is now mostly fields with a bowling club.

Chairman of Ferguslie Park Community Council, John McIntyre, said: “My concern is seeing the gas canisters and some kids light a fire and decide to put one of those in it.

“We could be looking at something really serious.”

He added: “It’s obvious the fly tipping is being done by commercial companies. I believe the land is privately owned but there are about four access points to it. If the council could do something about blocking those then that would go some way towards tackling it.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman confirmed the authority was looking in to the ownership of the land.

He said: “We are ascertaining ownership of the land before making contact with the owner to ensure they are aware of the fly-tipped items and will liaise with them to ensure they are removed.

“Fly-tipping is illegal, thoughtless, damaging to the local environment and costly to resolve.

“We are committed to tackling the matter and are currently reviewing our approach to fly- tipping in Renfrewshire to investigate the causes and put in place new actions to tackle the problem, including an enhanced Rapid Response Team.

“We would urge people to help us eradicate this problem by disposing of their waste correctly and by reporting fly tipping issues to 0300 300 0300.”
