Trinity High students boost two great causes

- Kirsty McKenzie

Pupils at a school in Renfrew had plenty to smile about when they donated a bumper cash boost to very deserving charities.

Students at Trinity High School were celebrating double success with an extra special cheque presentation to the good causes.

First up was Joe McConvile and his crusade of supportive pals who all shaved their heads to raise money for the campaign Let’s Get Leighanne to Germany.

The 14- year- old organised the event with best pal Kieran Sanderson from Renfrew High School.

The boys joined forces earlier in the month to ditch their locks in a bid to raise money to send Kieran’s mum to Germany for potentially lifesaving cancer treatment.

Kieran’s auntie, Katie Sanderson, told the Paisley Daily Express: “We are so proud of the boys. “It’s very rare for two schools to come together like this, so for them to do this for Leighanne is very special.”

Leighanne Sanderson, 38, has been battling stage four brain cancer and NHS doctors say she only has two to four months to live.

In addition to shaving their heads, the band of 23 boys organised a football tournament and raised a total of £800.

The school also handed over a second chque on the same day - donating more than £ 3,000 to worthy causes selected by the pupils as part of their work with chosen charity SPRED.

The money raised means that the school can help a young disabled boy from Paisley move out of hospital and into assisted living.

Some of the cash will also go towards St Vincent’s Hospice, amputees’ charity Finding Your Feet, Renfrewshire Foodbank and bereavement support Brightest Star.

Headteacher Margaret Anne Renfrew was joined by the hardworking pupils to hand over the cheque to Norma Scott from SPRED.

Mrs Renfrew said: “These donations are a fantastic achievement for all the pupils involved.

“Many of these causes have been chosen because they are close to the hearts of the pupils.

“It can be quite a personal decision so it is fabulous to see how much these cheques really mean to everyone involved.

“The pupils have all worked very, very hard and we are delighted for them.”
