- David Campbell

A dog walker was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after he was hit by a bus in Paisley.

The 45- year- old man and his pet were struck at the Glasgow Road and Penilee Road crossing, near St Mark’s Church, shortly after 1pm yesterday.

Emergency crews raced to the scene after reports that the man was trapped under a badly- damaged McGill’s coach.

Police say the man was conscious and breathing at the scene, but had suffered serious head and leg injuries.

Paramedics rushed him to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where

his condition is described as serious but stable.

It is understood the man’s dog was also injured during the incident and taken to a nearby vet by a neighbour.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Glasgow Road and Penilee Road in Paisley at 1.10pm.

“A 45-year-old man was injured after a collision with a bus. Police and paramedics attended and the man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“The man sustained injuries to his leg and head.”

Workmen were laying cones when the smash occurred as police cordoned off a half-mile stretch of the road.

The bus sat in the centre of the road with a smashed windscreen while officers quizzed a man with a McGill’s jumper.

A woman, who asked not to be named, told how emergency crews descended on the scene.

She said: “I heard a man and his dog had been injured.

“The bus window is badly smashed, it looks serious. “I hope they’re okay. “The whole stretch is really terrible with roadworks.

“Police have put tape up and stopped any traffic coming through.

“I work in a day centre nearby and we can’t get our residents in or out.”

A spokeswoman for McGill’s buses said: “We confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a road traffic incident on Glasgow Road today.

“This is currently under investigation and we are working in conjunction with Police Scotland on this. CCTV footage from the bus has been viewed and Police Scotland have not charged anyone involved.”

A spokesman from the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call to attend a road traffic incident at the junction of Glasgow Road and Penilee Road.

“We dispatched two ambulances and a trauma team to the scene and one male patient was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow.”
