Health and happiness are also on the menu

A community cafe has opened its doors to bring everyone together and offer support.

The Foxbar team intend their Paisley cafe to become a hub for people of all ages, linking in welfare rights, mental health support and food banks.

The cafe and community centre opened on Wednesday and the opening the culmination of a long, hard slog for organisers.

“The building was falling to bits”, explained Shirley Graham, who is chair of the cafe.

“We had to fight for two years to get access to it.

“Local businesses are quite supportive. We’ve put in a pool table and the cafe will subsidise the centre side of things.”

The centre aims to become a place of support for the local community and provide a “comfortable place” which offers services to the public that might not otherwise be there.

“It’s something we’ve never had here before”, said Shirley.

Secretary Roy Graham said quite a bit of work was needed to get the place shipshape.

He explained: “The building has been closed for some time and needed extensive work inside and out to bring it back for the use of our community.

“Thanks must go to the committee, the people of Foxbar, Gallowhill, Shortroods and also to the many businesses who have supported our aims for the centre with the donations of items to the centre – which have been much needed.

“The centre aims to provide facilities where people can reach out to many different agencies.”

Foxbar already boasts three community centres and a library, but the cafe will offer something new.

Roy added: “We also want to provide a place where the community can come and get use of the facilities, including kids, youngsters, young families and pensioners.

“So many buildings have closed and there are a lot of groups needing facilities that they can afford so they can give back to the community by opening new groups to make our area a better place. We just hope our centre can provide this.”

Shirley said there is still time for Express readers to get involved by volunteering at the centre in Amochrie Road.
