Thug stamped on man’s head till he passed out

Brute also bit clubber on face and arm

- Chris Taylor

A dad-to-be chased a clubber until he fell then stamped on his head until he passed out.

Michael Hughes, 24, put Kenneth Fleetham, 35, in hospital when he battered him after a town centre night out.

The brute claims he repeatedly hammered the delivery driver’s skull after he bit him on the face.

Hughes admitted causing severe injuries to the man when he was hauled into Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Alan Parfrey told how the revellers scuffled after meeting each other randomly.

He said: “Members of the public were within their own flats when they heard a disturbance in the street and began to look outside.

“They observed an argument between Mr Fleetham and the accused. “Blows were traded between the two. “They began to roll on the floor. “They got back to their feet and Mr Fleetham began running and weaving between cars that were parked to get away.

“That might have been the end of the matter, but the accused pursued him.

“The accused, by this stage, had removed his top. “The complainer fell to the ground. “He was on the ground, the accused arrived and began to stamp on his head. “He lost consciousness.

“He had no memory of any part of the evening after leaving the nightclub and waking up in the hospital.”

Terrified bystanders rushed to help Mr Fleetham as he lay seriously injured by the road.

Hughes watched on while they called police and tried to treat the stricken man.

The victim was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, underwent a CT scan and spent a night on a ward.

The pair had left separate nights out when the yob pounced in Storrie Street around 3am last July 29.

Hughes – who has a history of violent crime and was caught carrying a knife twice – appeared in court after the attack but was bailed pending trial.

He was placed under a curfew and ordered to stay inside between 7pm and 7am.

Defence lawyer Michael McKeown claimed his client was out with his pregnant girlfriend when he was approached by Mr Fleetham.

He said: “It’s a very serious matter and the nature of the assault will cause grave concern.

“He suffered quite significant injuries in the course of the incident.

“Most notably, he had a number of human bite marks on his face and arm.

“These have effectively left him scarred and requiring medical treatment.

“His face is marked and you can still see the bite marks.”

The court heard Hughes was jailed for four months for a separate offence last year.

Sheriff Seith Ireland warned he could face another spell behind bars.

He said: “I have noted your plea of guilty to this serious matter. “Your curfew is continued. “This will give a degree of protection to the public at large because you will be inside at night when they may be out.”

Hughes, of Fitzalan Drive, has been ordered to return for sentencing on June 22.
