The week- long contest saw 2,940 pupils from 220 classes at 22 schools in East Renfrewshire competing to win a trophy and the title of East Renfrewshire Sumdog Spring Maths Champions 2018.

Presenting the Cro s s Arthurlie pupils with their winning trophy, Councillor Paul O’Kane, Education and Equalities convener at East Renfrewshire Council, said: “Congratulations to all the pupils across East Renfrewshire who have performed so well in these maths challenges. Maths is so important for the development of our children and young people and it’s fantastic to see it being embraced across all our schools.

“Ensuring it is being taught in a fun and engaging way is key to pupils developing a lifelong interest in the subject, and this contest has certainly fired pupils’ imaginations. I was delighted to present the overall East Renfrewshire trophy at Cross Arthurlie Primary, whose pupils certainly excelled and are a credit to the school.”

The pupils worked individually in their class groups to answer up to 1,000 maths questions each over the duration of the contest using Sumdog’s online learning system.

The questions were customised to each pupil’s level of ability based on an initial assessment. Over one million maths questions were answered during the weeklong contest.

Primary 7- 2 from Cross Arthurlie emerged as champions with a winning score of 921 correct answers. A class of Primary 3 students at Cross Arthurlie placed seventh.

Sumdog CEO Andrew Hall said: “We’re delighted to have had so many schools from across East Renfrewshire compete in the contest. On behalf of everyone at Sumdog, I’d like to express my huge congratulations to all Primary 7 pupils at Cross Arthurlie on becoming the East Renfrewshire Spring Maths Contest champions.

“Digital technology is becoming an increasingly important and powerful tool for teachers and pupils in the classroom. Used properly, we believe it can make a real and meaningful contribution towards encouraging learning and improving attainment.

“We’re very grateful to all schools who took part for their efforts.

“I would also like to thank Councillor Paul O’Kane from East Renfrewshire Council for taking the time to visit Cross Arthurlie to present the trophy.”
