Vandal nightmare for Paisley firms

-

Vandals were causing thousands of pounds of damage to firms in Paisley’s Abercorn Street.

They were ripping out bricks and large chunks of masonry from nearby derelict tenements and hurling them at the glass windows and doors of the factories.

On one night they threw between two and three hundredweight of masonry alone through the glass frontage of Thomas White and Sons. More than £500 of damage was caused. And the switchboard and an electric typewriter were put out of action by flying bricks.

Whites, sick of replacing broken windows, were simply boarding them up now.

“The office was in devil of a mess when I saw it on Saturday night,” said managing director Mr Allan White.

“They actually broke in once before,” he said.

“But they never caused this amount of damage.

“This area has been zoned for industrial development.

“But who is going to bring their factory here?

“It is bad enough having to bring customers through that entrance like that.”

Mr White believed the vandals were getting their ‘ammunition’ from the empty tenements across from his office.

Renfrewshire Council were compiling a report on the situation.

And they were going to recommend that the council demolish the tenements as soon as possible.

Police were also investigating the matter.
