Spartans aim to show they’re not in it to make up the numbers

- American football

Paisley Spartans will continue their promotion push in the HNC First Division as they play hosts to the rest of the league today.

The flag American football side, based at Thornly Park Campus at Robertson Sports Centre, are enjoying an upturn in fortunes in only their second season in the league and already have a playoff spot well within their sights.

A character building first season saw the Spartans struggle to get up to speed with the rest of the league. But currently sitting fourth, victories over the Glasgow Killer Bees and Grangemouth Broncos today would put the Spartans in pole position to land second spot following a confidence-boosting opening gameweek.

An impressive 39- 27 victory over Aberdeen Silvercats on that occasion was the club’s first ever league victory.

The action kicks off at 10am today, with a feast of flag football on offer throughout what is set to be a sun-kissed day.

Spartans are first up as they take on rivals Glasgow, who they recorded a win over at the recent Iron Man competition at Toryglen. Grangemouth and Midlothian are next up at 11am, before Glasgow then take on runaway league leaders, Carnegie.

The hosts are then back in action at 1pm as they take on another of their Iron Man victims, the Grangemouth Broncos, before Carnegie and Midlothian finish the games at 2pm.

Paisley Spartans are always on the hunt for new recruits, with training taking place on Wednesday evenings ( 7pm9pm) and Sunday mornings (10am-noon) at Robertson Sports Centre. Newcomers just need to head along.
