Paisley Velo rack up the miles in Spain

- Craig Ritchie

Paisley Velo members are revelling in the dry and mild conditions the town is experiencing as they continue to take to the road.

Since their last 100-mile endeavour in April, the club’s riders have been putting in miles and miles of hill training and time trial racing.

Not content with just doing 100 miles, they recently embarked on an even longer journey up to Arrochar and over the Rest And Be Thankful climb, with the Big Ring group heading down to Otter Ferry and over the ‘C11’ climb to Dunoon, taking their total to over 125 miles once they had pedalled back to Paisley.

Just last week, a large group of riders took themselves off to Spain – they’re still there – to cycle some of the routes and climbs in and around Denia.

They have been clocking up around 60-80 miles per day in the blistering Spanish heat but have still be clocking up impressive times on some of cycling’s hardest climbs, including the Col de Rates, often included in the famous Vuelta a Espana race.

Back on home tarmac the club’s Series A Time Trial Championship is really heating up with a split made to keep things competitive. Here are the current standings: Group 1: 16:03 David McCormack, 16: 55 Ciaran Kirkpatrick, 17: 00 Ricardo Pallisco, 17:12 Sam McGrath, 18:23 Colin Sales, 18:26 Andy Taylor.

Group 2: 19:26 Sandy Ross, 19:53 Scott Nelson, 20: 03 Terry Nelson, 20: 05 Mark Syme, 20: 07 Andy McLeod, 20:10 Dugald McCallum, 20: 14 Simon Arnold, 20: 37 James MacKenzie, 20: 38 Liam McDaid, 21: 04 Mark Hanlon, 21: 44 Mark Grabham, 22:21 Hollie Porteous.

Sam McGrath, meanwhile, took part in the CTT Georgetown League on Wednesday evening, on the same course as the club’s own TT, and clocked a PB of 16:49.
