Clark aims to make his mark

Ex-Kilmarnock boss is latest Buddies hopeful

- Craig Ritchie

Former Birmingham City and Blackpool boss Lee Clark is keen to meet St Mirren chiefs as they ramp up their hunt for a new manager.

Express Sport understands that 45-year-old Englishman has submitted his CV to the Paisley club as they continue their hunt for Jack Ross’ replacement.

The former Newcastle United and Sunderland midfielder has been without a job since his sacking from English League One side Bury in October.

However, it is believed that he is keen to return to the dugout – and has singled out the Buddies as the perfect chance to return to management.

Clark lasted just eight months in charge of the Shakers and was dismissed after a run of four defeats on the bounce that left the Gigg Lane outfit sitting second bottom of the division.

But despite a recent downturn in fortunes, Clark was once tipped as one of the most promising young managers in the UK.

He cut his managerial teeth with Huddersfield Town back in 2008 where he led the Terriers to the promotion play-offs in both 2010 and 2011, only to lose on penalties at the second attempt.

Ill-fated stints at both Birmingham and Blackpool followed as he struggled to reverse the fortunes of both of the ailing sides while the clubs contended with a number of off-field issues.

He is perhaps best known in Scotland for a rollercoaster spell with Kilmarnock, where he would help the Rugby Park side avoid the drop by defeating Falkirk 4-1 in the play-off final in his first season in charge.

The interview process is set to kick- off at the start of next week with Saints chiefs keen to have a new manager in place towards the end of next week.

Saints 1987 cup- winning legend Paul Lambert remains the frontrunner with the bookies, however it is understood that the ex- Norwich City and Aston Villa gaffer would favour a stay south of the border.

Robbie Neilson, who has already expressed an interest in joining his hometown club, remains in the running, as does former Ross County boss Jim McIntyre.

Livingston revealed earlier this week that their boss David Hopkin, attracting interest from Saints, Carlisle United and Barnsley, has asked for time to assess his options before committing his future to the Lions.

While, Alloa boss Jim Goodwin pulled out of the running to land his former employers – electing instead to stick with the Championship side.
