Our garden is top of the blocks

Paisley pupils’ Minecraft creation in top contest

- Kenneth Speirs

Everything in the garden is coming up roses for a bunch of green-fingered Paisley pupils.

Youngsters from West Primary School proved they really know their onions at a top horticultural competition.

The children took part in the Pallet Garden Challenge, a countrywide competition to create a mini garden in just one square metre of growing space.

And their theme was none other than Minecraft – the popular computer game about placing blocks and going on adventures.

Class teacher Andrew Minshall said: “Our garden is based on Minecraft where life is all about blocks.

“Our creation consists of our own Minecraft world built out in a series of blocks, which contain a number of plants including lettuces, marigolds, primroses and pansies.

“The centrepiece of our garden is a large creeper that has been hatched into our Minecraft world.”

Mr Minshall admitted that he was the one who turned into a pupil when it came to Minecraft.

“I was the one learning from the children about it !” he said. “They were teaching me.” West Primary has its own long- established garden and all of the children at the school get the chance to be creative by encouraging them to learn about science and nature.

The competition, organised by the Scottish Gardeners’ Forum, was judged at Gardening Scotland, the national festival of gardening and outdoor living, which took place at the Royal Highland Centre Edinburgh, last weekend.

And the West Primary School children were hoping their unique Minecraft garden would catch the eyes of judges, as well as 25,000 visitors.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ann Burns, of the Scottish Gardeners’ Forum, said: “We are constantly impressed by the level of planning and gardening know- how that young gardeners pack into their Pallet Gardens and we are looking forward to seeing the results at this year’s show.”
