Shock for Clan as key man Doty departs

Club wishes Jacob well as he heads for Nottingham Panthers

- Craig Ritchie

Braehead Clan have been dealt a blow following the news the influential Jacob Doty has moved on to pastures new.

Doty made a huge impact in his one and only season with the Braehead side although it would ultimately end in disappointment as Clan failed to reach the end of season play-offs for the first time in their history.

That led to the departure of head coach John Tripp after just one season in charge, with former Paisley Pirate goalkeeper Pete Russell preparing to lead the side into the new season.

Russell has already moved to sign up a handful of last season’s squad, including Michal Gutwald, Craig Peacock and Matt Sullivan.

They join new faces in Zack Fitzgerald, Gerard Hanson, Jack Musil and Matt Stanisz in agreeing deals with the club this summer.

However, Doty will not be back for the Purple Army having agreed a contract with Elite League rivals Nottingham Panthers.

Panthers head coach Rich Chernomaz has hailed his new signing having been impressed with his record for the ailing Clan last season.

Sixteen goals, 35 points, and 56 outings for Clan were enough to catch the eye.

Chernomaz said: “I think he is a good addition to our team and he was considered one of the heavyweights in the league last year.

“He is only 24 years old, he brings a lot of size and strength to the side.

“You always need to have that element in your team and after speaking with Jacob he is very excited to be joining us.

“He is a guy that you can play down the line and is also very versatile in that regard.

“The important part is that he can bring a physical element to our team and, when needed, he can drop the gloves and really stand up for the team.”

Braehead Clan have also confirmed the American forward’s departure, bidding the popular figure farewell online.

A club spokesman said: “The Clan can confirm forward Jacob Doty will not be returning for the 2018/19 season.

“We would like to wish Jacob and his wife Jessica all the very best with their new club.”
