Ice cream raider’s costly break-in

Misery for Jennifer as thief targets dessert shop

- David Campbell

A sweet- toothed thief devoured a whole tub of bubblegum- flavoured ice cream as he robbed a Paisley dessert shop.

The sugar- hungry crook ransacked the Dessert Rush shop in Well Street and even nicked a Curly Wurly during the raid.

Gutted shop owner Jennifer Cairns now hopes the yob may have left a fingerprint on a giant tub of ice cream which could lead cops to the crook.

She told the Paisley Daily Express: “The person ransacked the whole shop. He went through everything. He even ate a tub of ice cream while he was in .

“It was blue bubblegum flavour. He ate the whole thing.

“But the police think they might have fingerprint from it, but it could be mine.”

Jennifer and partner Zubair Arshad, 35, who only opened the shop four months ago have had nothing but rave reviews since – and clearly the suspect has been paying attention.

“He was in the shop for more than an hour. He ransacked the place. He has eaten the ice cream and Nutella,” mum-offour Jennifer said.

“We have had to replace all the ice cream and stock because clearly we don’t know what else he has eaten.

“He damaged our Tango machine trying to get it out, but it is connected into the rear of the shop.

“It is offline just now and we are waiting for the engineer to come out.

“But it is a big seller so we are losing out on that.”

In total, Jennifer estimates the break-in has cost them more than £2,000, as they were forced to replace damaged stock, a stolen hard drive, cash from the till and a front shutter.

The incident happened at around 2.40am last Wednesday morning, as the yob was spotted trying various shop shutters in Well Street before getting into Jennifer’s shop.

She has vowed that the thieves won’t drive them out and they are focused on making up lost takings. She added: “Clearly, it is upsetting that someone has been in the shop and my staff member is a little frightened to be here but we won’t lie down to these people.

“We just want to let people know that there are people out there who are capable of this.”

A Po l i c e Scotland spokeswoman confirmed they are still investigating the breakin. Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
