Every one a legend in their own right

- Alison Rennie

A St Mirren Legends football match netted more than £3,000 to help a three-yearold fight cancer.

Lifelong Saints fans Ian Brown and Ian Jamieson organised the game at Ralston Community Sports Ground in aid of Raise for Rebecca.

Rebecca McKenna from Erskine was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in January.

Her parents, Chris and Vicky are trying to raise £140,000 to send her to America for a potentially life-saving drug trial to stop the cancer returning.

Saints legend Stephen McGarry was back from Australia and snapped up the chance to be captain on the day, playing alongside Hugh Murray, Paul Ridden, Ludovic Roy, Junior Mendez, Barry Lavety, Tommy Turner, Lee Mair, David Van Zanten, Gary Peebles and Barry McLaughlin.

Ian said: “It was absolutely superb. On the day we raised £3,320 from bucket donations, a raffle and people paying to play.

“We also had people pay directly to the Raise for Rebecca fund.

“It was brilliant, a great effort. Beforehand I thought we’d do well to raise £2,000, so to get that much was brilliant.”

Around 300 fans of all ages came along to support the game and Ian said there was a great friendly atmosphere.

He added: “There was a lot of the usual football banter.

“This is the first St Mirren legends game and the fans loved it.

“We’d definitely like to do something like this again. People were getting photos with the players. It was great.” Final score was 7-3 to the Legends. To keep updated on Rebecca’s journey, follow Raise for Rebecca on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
