Bogus bank staff con victim out of £30,000 Police launch probe and warn public of phone fraud danger
A man was duped into transferring more than £ 30,000 to conmen in a cruel phone banking scam.
Police are investigating after fraudsters convinced the 37-yearold to hand over the cash after posing as bank staff.
The crooks called the Bishopton man claiming his account had been compromised and he needed to move his money out fast.
Unfortunately, the victim fell for the cruel con and lost a five-figure sum of money to the criminals.
It is understood the incident happened last month but was only just reported to the police.
Officers are now probing the fraud and issued a warning to other people to take precautions when it comes to managing their money online and over the phone.
Inspector Cassie Glass, who is based in Johnstone, said: “We are investigating after a 37-year-old Bishopton man was subjected to a telephone banking fraud.
“The victim was contacted by criminals purporting to be from his bank.
“They told him that his account had been compromised and that he should transfer his money to them in order to protect it.
“However, it became apparent that they were not from his bank and that the money was gone.
“The victim reported the incident to us and we are now investigating.”
Inspector Glass also issued a general warning to members of the public to help protect against scammers.
She added: “I would urge people to be very cautious about discussing their bank accounts and information over the phone.
“Do not discuss any sensitive information with cold callers and do not transfer money from your account.
“If you have any concerns simply hang up the phone and call your bank directly on a number you can see listed on their website.
“Or call your local branch to seek advice.”
If you have any information, you should contact Police on 101.
