It’s back to school for Nancy

-

Nancy Glaister was living proof that it is never too late to learn.

The active pensioner had just taken her Higher Grade Biology exam, we revealed in June 1988.

She was just one of 48 adults taking O Levels and Highers and non-vocational classes at St Cuthbert’s High, in Johnstone.

Mrs Glaister, of Tandlehill Road, Kilbarchan, returned to school a few years previously when she decided to take an O Level in Biology.

She explained:“I did not know anything about the subject, but it includes Botany and I was interested in plants.

“St Cuthbert’s was the nearest school offering the course, so I enrolled there.”

Returning to a classroom full of teenagers was a very new experience.

Mrs Glaister continued:“I was concerned with how they might react to my presence in the classroom.

“But I need not have worried for the students and the teachers have all accepted me without any problems and I have thoroughly enjoyed the course.”

St Cuthbert’s was one of a number of schools in the area that offers a wide range of courses to adults interested in academic qualifications, brushing up skills, such as typing or shorthand, or just stretching their minds.

Headmaster John McLoone said:“The number of adults taking courses keeps increasing.

“We are delighted with the situation and continue to encourage it.”
