Paisley Rugby Club sign off season with showpiece match

- David Campbell

Paisley Rugby Club signed off the season in the blistering heat as players new and old battled for bragging rights.

Outgoing Club President Gavin Newlands led his select team to victory over the Paisley 1st XV at the Anchor in the blistering sunshine.

Gavin declared the event “a great end to the season” after his team secured the exhibition match win with the last kick of the ball.

With Gavin building the team around himself at stand off, there was some quality rugby on show in the traditional end-of-season showpiece.

A good crowd gathered to watch the action and showed their appreciation for all the players who pulled on the Paisley jersey in the fun-filled affair.

Club stalwart Paul Reid had a tongue in cheek dig at some of the officiating on the day, but stressed how much the match means to the club.

He said: “It was absolutely roasting out there so I’m glad the boys all got through the game.

“Some good rugby was on show and a few dodgy refereeing decisions cost us the game in the end.

“It was great to see so many guys turn out for both teams and it was a fitting end to the season.”

The match marked the close to Paisley’s up-and down season, with Gordon Powrie’s side missing out on the BT West Division Two title and promotion, but securing some fantastic wins along the way.

Retiring Paisley Lock Murray Lowe added: “We’ve had a bit of a roller coaster season but it was good to close things off with this fixture.”

Following the end of season clash the the club held its annual end-of-season awards ceremony.
