PLAYING IT SAFE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH Stubbs aims to please fans

- Craig Ritchie

Alan Stubbs insists the word “safety” hasn’t even crossed his mind as he plots to mastermind St Mirren’s top six assault.

The 46-year-old was yesterday unveiled as the new boss of the Buddies as he steps into the breach vacated by Jack Ross a fortnight ago.

And he set his sights immediately upon building on the good work carried out by his predecessor.

Stubbs was adamant that the club has to be more ambitious than simply trying to stay in the league as he promised fans that he aims to excite them with an attacking style of play and a willingness to go all out to win.

Stubbs said: “It is not in my vocabulary for me to say we just ‘need to stay up’.

“I think it is wrong for the fans for us to say that. “We want it to be exciting. “Where that is going to take us I don’t know.

“But I want to try and bring some exciting players if I can and build on the work that Jack has done here, but I want to improve on it.

“I have not really thought about a position but I have thought about doing as well as we possibly could.

“I wouldn’t have come here to just finish 10th.

“There is no point in me sitting at this desk if I was wanting to come into a club and finish 10th in the table.”

With the new season a matter of weeks away, the former Celtic and Everton defender revealed he is keen to delve into the transfer market as soon as possible in a bid to supplement last season’s titlewinning squad.

And he admits it’s crucial that the Buddies bulk up on the right players if they are to stand any chance of improving.

Stubbs added: “There will obviously be players coming in. I have looked at the squad and there are some good players there.

“I will give all the players an opportunity but I think the one thing is that we will be seeing some players come in.

“We want to be as competitive as we possibly can. In order to do that you always need to keep looking forward.”
