Shake-up plan for transport system
Plans to shake up Scotland’s transport system are being considered by parliament.
Renfrewshire North and West MSP Derek Mackay has put forward the Transport (Scotland) Bill alongside transport minister Humza Yousaf.
The bill proposes giving local authorities and regional transport partnerships the flexibility to improve bus services through working with operators or, if there is a strong case, taking on a local franchise or running it themselves.
There would also be low emission zones, a ban on double parking and parking on pavements, standardising smart ticket technology and strengthening the powers of the Scottish RoadWorks commissioner to better regulate road works.
Mr Mackay said:“This Bill reflects a period of significant public consultation and engagement.
“It provides Renfrewshire Council with the tools to address issues specific to this area.
“We are also providing clearer options for authorities to pursue local franchising or provide services themselves in appropriate circumstances.
“The Bill will allow for decriminalised enforcement of double parking and parking on pavements.
“This is an issue I know is a problem in parts of Renfrewshire and has been raised with me by many constituents.
“This will help transform our local towns and villages cities into cleaner, more accessible and more pleasant spaces to live in.”
