Aileen’s joy as she finishes 10k run

- Express Reporter

Devoted daughter Aileen Orr has raised a four- figure sum for charity after tackling the Simplyhealth Great Women’s Run.

Aileen took part in the Women’s 10k in aid of her late mum Terry, who passed away from cancer aged 75 in August last year.

The primary source of her cancer was unknown and was never found, therefore couldn’t be treated.

Aileen decided to run to highlight Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP), which affects three per cent of people diagnosed with cancers in the UK.

In these cases, a secondary cancer has been found but the primary site is unknown.

In February, Aileen had set herself a double challenge to help raise awareness of CUP and raise vital funds for the foundation to help those affected.

This double challenge included taking part in the Women’s 10k, which took place on Sunday, and a 100k night ride, which she completed last month.

As a result of her efforts, Aileen has raised a total of £1,185 .

She told us: “I have run the Women’s 10k before, but this time round it felt extra special as I was doing it for my mum.

“I am thrilled that I beat my time by two minutes, as I had not done as much training as I had liked before the run so it was a real struggle. But the thought of my mum throughout the run really helped me to power through.

“It was really emotional towards the end as I knew my mum wouldn’t be waiting for me at the finish line this year, but my husband Brian and I had a special toast to her once I had finished. I know she would have been extremely proud of me and she was definitely there in spirit.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has kindly sponsored me during my double challenge.

“The Cancer of Unknown P r i ma r y Fo u n d at i o n specifically supports research into diagnosis and treatment for those affected and towards supporting families who has a loved one affected by cancer.”
