Paisley teenager Dawn Wylie was drafted in to the cast of a top drama club at the last minute to take on the role of a maid.

And the young Castlehead High schoolgirl found herself part of an awardwinning team who had been chosen to represent Scotland in the finals of a national competition, we reported in June 1988.

She would travel to Wales that month with other award-winning members of the Old Grammarians Amateur Dramatic Society to try to win the British title for Best One Act Play.

The 15-year-old actress, who lived in Anchor Wynd, said: “It was great to be in the cast. “I didn’t say a word on stage. “It was quite literally a walk-on, walk-off part, but I really enjoyed it.”

Members of the local drama group were competing in the finals of the Scottish Community Drama Association’s once-act play festival in Inverness when Dawn took to the stage.

And they won the top drama award for a record-breaking fifth time when they were presented with The Wheatley Tassie at the event.

The original entry to the competition was 200 teams and the Paisley club was the first one to have won the championship five times since the SCDA was founded in 1926.

And when the Old Grammarians went to Wales early in 1989, the plan was for Dawn to be there too in the production of Pinter’s The Birthday Party.

“I’m really looking forward to the trip,” she said.
