Ross plays her part in heroic Scotland victory
Former Buddie Jane Ross played a starring role as Scotland Women completed a remarkable comeback to see off Poland.
The Scots fought back from two goals down with just 12 minutes remaining to seal a 3-2 victory in Kielce.
Dzesika Jaszek had fired Poland into an early lead from a tight angle before Sophie Howard turned a cross into her own net to double the deficit for the hosts.
However, Kim Little’s freekick evaded everyone to give Scotland some hope, before Ross smashed a low shot into the bottom corner to level it up.
But Lisa Evans was to be the hero as she sealed the victory for the Scots with a 90th-minute winner.
Ross, who began her career in Paisley, recently left English side Manchester City at the end of her contract. She had to settle for a place on the bench for the Poland clash but head coach Shelley Kerr was delighted with the striker’s contribution.
She said: “It was so tough for us to leave Jane out of the starting line- up. It’s been 10 games myself and Andy Thompson have been in charge of – this was the 11th – and she’s started every one of them.
“But we thought Erin ( Cuthbert) could hold the ball up and I thought she was magnificent. But we knew that Jane coming on was likely to pose a threat and she’s always likely to get you a goal.
“There were so many good performances but we looked at the bench and it’s brilliant the strength in depth we have. And don’t forget the players who were in the stand today - there’s so much competition.”
